Speeches
Christiana – Hey Everyone, My name is Christiana Hatch and I am running for the position of Public Relations chair for our chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi. I am very grateful and excited to have this opportunity. I think I am a good fit for this position because I am very organized and detail oriented. I have created several posters in the past using Canva. I am pretty good at using social media. Again, I am very grateful for this opportunity and am looking forward to seeing what the future holds.

Questions
- What do you enjoy about graphic design? Why are creative graphics important?
- (Christiana) Something I like about graphic design is the creative component. There are endless opportunities. Creative graphics are important because it is a way to draw attention in and still get the information across. Also, humans are more likely to remember thing that have color.
- (Hailey) Creative graphics are important because they draw people’s attention. If it looks interesting, people are more likely to pay attention. One thing I enjoy about graphic design is especially in today’s world, you have so much freedom with all the creating tools online. This allows you to create exactly what you want/need. I find it fun to explore and see what I am capable of creating.
- (Kaia) I enjoy envisioning what I want a project to look like and seeing it get made as I go along. I think these graphics are important because they catch people’s eyes, and it’s more interesting than just reading several lines of information. Without creative graphics, I think our posts would go unnoticed.
- How do you plan to keep yourself up to date with trends and boost our social media pages?
- (Christiana) One way I keep myself up to date with trends is through Tiktok and Instagram. These seem to always be changing and updating to reflect current trends. I feel like advertising our social media is one way to get it out there. I also think if we can figure out a way to get on to the North Central districts instagram, that would boost our presence.
- (Hailey) I use social media quite frequently so I have somewhat of an idea of what is trending right now and have no doubt I can use that to boost our social media page (while keeping it as professional as possible). I am not afraid to ask my committee/other people for ideas/suggestions on ways I can improve in doing so.
- (Kaia) I currently use Instagram very regularly, so I am consistently up to date on trends and other things people are interested in. In order to increase outreach I would use hashtags, tag others, and create interesting/informative posts so people are more inclined to read and share them.
- What is your online presence like? What platforms are you most comfortable with?
- (Christiana) I do not have a massive online presence. I keep my personal social media accounts pretty private with mainly people that I know and/or know of. I am pretty comfortable with all platforms although I mainly use Facebook, Instagram, and snapchat.
- (Hailey) I use/am comfortable with Instagram, Facebook, Tik tok, and Snapchat.
- (Kaia) I currently use Instagram and Facebook regularly, but would be open to getting familiar with other platforms like TikTok.
- What ideas do you have to engage the alumni in our chapter events/projects year round?
- (Christiana) I feel like keeping in touch with the alumni is a big way to keep engagement up. I like the idea of possibly featuring an alumni section in the newsletters. I am not entirely sure what chair that would fall on if it isn’t PR. Another thing that I think would be cool is doing a virtual reunion. Life can drag people every which way after graduation and it isn’t plausible for them to travel far lengths to participate in events.
- (Hailey) I think keeping up with our social media and keeping it engaging/creative is important because it can keep the alumni interested in our events/projects. Showing as many interesting aspects/updates our chapter will encourage them to keep engaged with us.
- (Kaia) I think maintaining communication with alumni is an important aspect. I haven’t held a position in which I needed to stay in touch with alumni, but it seems they could get lost while taking care of things for the current members in the chapter. I also think having enough events that they’re able to attend is vital; alumni are going to be people with jobs and families, so more opportunities for them to participate would give them options and may allow some people to join us for events at all.
- Have you used Canva before or made social media graphics before?
- (Christiana) I have used Canva before for multiple research project posters that I have been a part of.
- (Hailey) Yes, I have used canva before! I have not specifically made social media graphics before however I have been exposed to seeing lots of them on social media and am confident I can design one.
- (Kaia) I haven’t used Canva before, but I used Google slides to make the newsletter last semester.
- Describe your organizational and time management skills.
- (Christiana) There are a few techniques that I use to manage my time. I keep a physical planner where I write down all of my assignments and tasks with due dates. Sometimes if it is a larger task, I will delegate time over a couple of days if time permits. I also keep a google calendar with all of the same things because sometimes I might not have my physical planner and will have my phone or laptop. I like to plan my weeks out in advance so I can delegate that time accordingly.
- (Hailey) I have a planner for all of my school assignments. I use my google calendar to organize my schedule and make sure I don’t forget/have overlapping events. When I notice I am starting to procrastinate something like an assignment and wasting time, I drag myself out of my house and the library or some place where I can accomplish what I need to get done (I dragged myself to the connection to do this haha). I overall consider myself a very organized person who finds joy in keeping things sorted.
- (Kaia) I currently use to-do lists for each week to keep track of things needing to be done, and it serves as a good reminder of what I need to do and allows me to easily sort what needs to get done first. I sort my records of things in ways that make sense (e.g. by year or by subject) so I can easily find things.
- Our social media should be a reflection of our chapter (personality, passion, members). How would you promote that with fun eye-catching graphics while maintaining a professional image?
- (Christiana) I think fun, eye-catching colors can promote a positive reflection of our chapter while still maintaining a professional image. I also think being very selective and proactive in what you are posting is always a good idea.
- (Hailey) I have learned a lot about being professional and have seen many examples of professional yet fun, eye capturing posts and I am confident that I will be able to create posts that have these qualities.
- (Kaia) I wouldn’t overuse unprofessional things like memes (although a few here and there can catch eyes) and would find ways to sort information in a graphic in a way that doesn’t require a lot of dead space needing to be filled. I also believe proper grammar and formatting shows professionalism.
- Why do you want to be PR Chair?
- (Christiana) I want to be a PR chair because it is something different than I have ever done. Even though I haven’t been in a position like this before, I can adapt quickly so I feel like it shouldn’t be an issue. I would like to think that I have the creativity and I can work my way around a social media page. I have created graphics previously on multiple occasions.
- (Hailey) I want to be PR chair because it would be a great opportunity to have a major role in running the social media pages and creating what people will see about our chapter. I have a lot of respect for the chapter and I would love to use that love to showcase our chapter in the best light possible.
- (Kaia) I think one of our biggest downfalls in KKPSI is our lack of outreach and attracting people to join the chapter, and I hope as PR chair I could make a difference in this area.
