Ritual

Speeches

Daken – I am honored to be nominated for Ritual chair, especially considering how large of a part rituals play in the winter semester. I believe that my keen sense of organization will help keep this chair in order. On top of this – rituals are so cool!! Spooky candles and cool skyrim music is one of my favorite parts of the winter semester for our chapter, and I would be so happy to help contribute to that atmosphere for our MC’s. 🙂

Maddie S. – This year has been a pretty crazy one with so many changes throughout, that it got a little bit hectic. One of the saving graces has been the leaders in positions currently who have made sure that the chapter has run smoothly despite it. I think that, given the opportunity, I can do similarly and help our chapter grow both in numbers and in community, make sure our chapter duties are fulfilled, and lead our chapter into its future.

Questions

  1. Where do you plan to store the lectern and ritual supply bin?
    • (Daken) Living room. I have a LOT of space in my living room right now.
    • (Hailey) I will have plenty of space for it in my apartment next year.
    • (Maddie S) I would likely store them in my closet in my room.
    • (Paige) At my house. I have a cabin out in my backyard that my family and I built that can easily store it. Plus I live ~25 min away from school and head home each weekend so it’s not an issue storing and transporting.
  2. Why is the ritual and its history important? What is your favorite part?
    • (Daken) The ritual and its history is important so that our chapter and brothers can understand why KKY was created, and what its purpose is. By learning the purpose of our chapter, we can better understand how to serve our community and bands. I think my favorite part of the ritual is the second degree, where the MC’s get to follow the points of the star in complete blindness. The trust MC’s have in our VP to guide them is so cool (and obviously making sure that nobody catches their hair on fire).
    • (Hailey) I think the rituals are a very special thing for our fraternity. It is so cool to me to think that these rituals have been a part of the fraternity’s history and have been performed across the different chapters for years. My favorite part is third degree when the candidates become brothers and we do the handshake with all of them. I liked being the new brother and being a brother welcoming a committee.
    • (Maddie S) Ritual and its history are important because the ritual is traditional and its history and routine should be passed down so that every new brother has the chance to experience and participate in the rituals. My favorite part of the ritual is after degrees, when everyone gets to socialize, take pictures, and celebrate the new members.
    • (Paige) It’s your first time truly being a part of KPsi. When I was going through the degrees as an MC I kept thinking back to what I learned in lessons about the guys who started KPsi and how fun it must have been for them to create this secret ritual shared amongst the brothers. My favorite part when I was going through the ritual was meeting my big Leah and getting the pin. However now that I’ve seen the degrees as an official member, my favorite part is being able to speak at the rituals. It was fun reading off our parts and seeing the candidates scuffle around our chairs.
  3. How do you plan to communicate with brothers about assigning parts and organizing rehearsal times?
    • (Daken) Some form of messaging app, I have found, has been the most helpful. I’d most likely create a group chat similar to this year’s rituals on whatever platform everyone has. I think it’d be helpful to discuss parts ahead of time before the ritual so that we know who is doing what part when the ritual day comes. We can also set up a time to rehearse, either before ritual or the morning of ritual, to ensure that everyone knows their part and knows what is happening.
    • (Hailey) It will be important for me to plan ahead to make sure we have parts assigned and they are all rehearsed to make sure things run smoothly. I make an announcement at a meeting (probably the Sunday meeting prior to the Sunday that first degree happens) to make sure people remember to help out if available/interested. I will make a facebook poll where people can vote/comment which degrees they want to help at if any. I will then confirm with those people which degree(s) they are helping with as well as communicate the expectations of when to come in to rehearse.
    • (Maddie S) I would utilize the group chat to find out who is interested in having a part and then go from there. I’d like to set up rehearsals based around already set meeting or event times, I believe this would make it easier and more convenient for everyone.
    • (Paige) I think pretty straightforward that I’ll just send a message to those who answered first about what’s expected, when to meet.
  4. In the near past, the Ritual Chair has set up the room for the ritual while readers practice their parts. This format is time consuming and not smooth. What do you think you could do to make set up and rehearsal more efficient?
    • (Daken) I believe that having a ritual committee would be super helpful in making rehearsal smoother and more efficient. Then, we will always have a set of people to help set up our room for rituals. This would be incredibly helpful if each person was also delegated a certain task, such as two people set up the lectern while two people set up the star, and another one or two work on clearing/setting up chairs. This allows for our process to be set up smoothly, and for those who are practicing parts to have time to do so. This committee doesn’t even have to be the same people each time, but rather a group of people who are interested in helping who have discussed their roles beforehand.
    • (Hailey) I think one thing that can help set up is when people come to help set up, have them assigned to a task beforehand such as setting up the star, grabbing stands and chairs, setting up the altar, etc. It will make things more efficient when people know exactly what to help with.
    • (Maddie S) I believe as a group, we could come up with creative, fun, and interesting ways to recruit new members. Effective recruitment is a very important part of teaching others about the fraternity, developing interest, and attracting potential new members whose values align with our chapter.
    • (Paige) I think getting other people to help set up in membership committee or in general members of KPsi is an easy fix. I could just rehearse in the room with the readers and give an easy paper that says how to set things out to those setting up. If getting people to do so ever becomes an issue, either I would talk about having it count as .5 of a service event point or working with the readers individually while the others set up and rotate people in. Plus I’ll talk to Marie to ask what worked and what didn’t work to find the best solution to making it efficient.
  5. As Ritual Chair, you are required to serve on the Membership Committee. What do you believe you personally contribute to this committee?
    • (Daken) I do not have any specific ideas for recruitment events for membership committees as of right now. However, I can contribute meaningful discussion about recruitment ideas that others may have. I would maybe consider, though, asking brotherhood if we could do mario kart night as a recruitment event under the brotherhood pillar because everyone loves mario kart, and I think this would help attract people to KKY also.
    • (Hailey) I loved being a full brother this year during the recruitment process. It was exciting to recruit new people and see them go through the process of becoming a brother. I think this love for the process will help inspire me to help come up with events that will encourage them to join. My organization will also be useful when helping plan the recruitment events as well as plan the rituals.

    • (Paige) I think I’d be helpful in planning and execution of the membership events/recruitment as well as making sure stuff done during recruitment events pertains to what is said in ritual so members can connect the dots that we did these events for this reason.  Also I’m very useful at helping with the budgeting of these events and executing them so I’m very handy.
  6. Why do you want to be the Ritual Chair?
    • (Daken) I’d like to be the ritual chair because the rituals were one of the coolest parts of KPsi for me, both during my initiation year and this year. I loved reading for the rituals this year, but I would not mind doing more behind the scenes for rituals!
    • (Hailey) I would like to be ritual chair because the degrees are one of the main things I look forward to during the winter semester. It would be an amazing opportunity to have a major role in running them.
    • (Maddie S) I think that I’d have a good time with it, and I’m especially excited to see new members go through the recruitment process and rituals that I’ve recently experienced. It’d be really cool to help organize the events that I found a lot of enjoyment and community in, and be able to see others have those experiences as well.
    • (Paige) I think I’d be a good fit for this position. Plus the rituals are a fun thing we do so it’s nice to help out.
