Questions

  1. How comfortable are you with being responsible for organizing/putting together service events?
    • (Hailey) I am comfortable. Especially since I had the opportunity to be service chair this past year, I am confident to take what I have learned from this year, and improve it for next year.
    • (Kaia) I am comfortable putting together service events, and would love to do so because it’s a huge part of KKPSI. I like organizing events and would like the novelty of service events since none of my previous officer positions involved service.
  2. Planning service events involves communicating with staff members, such as Sean and Cassie, and reaching out to band directors in the area. How will you communicate with them to set up events and how frequently?
    • (Hailey) This past year as service chair, I communicated with Sean and Cassie through email at the beginning of fall and winter semester to make sure concert ushering/teardown is good to go (making sure I know the concert dates that need help, etc). I also would reach out whenever necessary (example: I sent an email to Sean when trying to plan a stand touch-up date). I sent an email to Zeeland highschool’s band to try and plan a time to go and so a horn shining event for their band students.
    • (Kaia) I would most likely communicate by email since it’s (in my opinion) the most professional way. I would message frequently enough to be up to date on everything while not filling up their inbox, which bi-weekly should be able to manage.
  3. How will you serve the music community outside of the marching band? GV?
    • (Hailey) I have been trying to plan a horn shining event at Zeeland high school. Our concert ushering/teardown helps other aspects of the music department outside of marching band. Doing a stand tune-up will help anyone who uses the stands. Sound-proofing the practice rooms will help anyone who uses the practice rooms
    • (Kaia) I serve outside of the marching band by being a member/officer of other student organizations, and serve in my hometown over the summer by helping with my marching band from my high school (particularly their band camp).
  4. How would you describe your organizational skills? How would you stay organized with tracking everyone’s service hours, service active projects, and keeping track of service documentation?
    • (Hailey) I consider myself to be an organized person and have no doubts that I will be able to continue to organize everything that comes along with being service chair.
    • (Kaia) I would stay organized by keeping all of the records for the service chair in a similar area (even on the same document) so information isn’t being spread everywhere. I organize by putting information into folders or separate headings, and it was a method that worked successfully during my time as secretary.
  5. How do you delegate tasks? If you have an event you planned, how will you delegate what needs to be done to your committee?
    • (Hailey) Giving my committee actual tasks is something I can improve on. Part of this is coming up with more complex events that they can help/have an active role in rather than just planning/talking through simple service projects with them and just announcing them myself. To delegate tasks would first ask my committee if there is a part they WANT to do. If they don’t have a preference on what they want to help with, I can help them pick/assign them something.
    • (Kaia) I plan to delegate tasks by allowing everybody to do the work they need to as a baseline, and to spread tasks out among committee members if something is too taxing or needs more than one person’s attention. I would also ensure everybody has some sort of task and it’s not the same people every time to prevent others from feeling like they aren’t helping the committee.
  6. What creative ideas do you have for service events or ways to improve the service aspect of our chapter?
    • (Hailey) One service event that could be more of a whole chapter thing/involve as much of the chapter as we want is making thank you cards for music faculty. They can be short and sweet and I am sure they will be appreciated. It also incorporates brotherhood because we can work on them together, have fun, and we are doing an act of service.
    • (Kaia) I think more projects revolving around uniform and instrument cleaning would fill a gap in the service we do, since the majority of our service events are ushering and tear-down. I think they would be easy and cheap to do during concert and marching band seasons, and especially people who don’t have the means to do it themselves could benefit.
  7. What is something you have noticed is lacking in our music department that you believe we could improve through service?
    • (Hailey) I think soundproofing the practice rooms would be such a great thing to do and it’s unfortunate that we weren’t able to do it this year but I am hoping to do it next year if we are able to. I am more than willing to put it together if I am a service chair again.
    • (Kaia) I think instrument maintenance is the biggest problem: for having a music program it always surprised me there was no way to get small instrument repairs/cleaning without driving a good distance or paying a lot of money.
  8. How do you plan to efficiently run committee meetings and communicate with your committee members?
    • (Hailey) I think communication through the facebook messages chat has worked fine for us for things as far as planning meetings, asking quick questions, etc.
    • (Kaia) I plan to run committee meetings well by being concise with information and giving everyone a chance to speak and give opinions. Communicating electronically seems to be the best method in order to reach everyone at once and quickly, but I would be willing to update people at chapter meetings if they preferred.
  9. Why do you want to be Service Chair?
    • (Hailey) I want to be service chair because after being service chair this year, I have thought of ways I’d like to improve. This includes: Coming up with more complex events that my committee can be more involved in rather than just going to them when I need opinions on things such as when it would be best to do events), and being able to do organize the service events that could not happen this year such as sound-proofing the practice rooms
    • (Kaia) I’ve never held an officer position that revolved around service, and I think it would help me grow new skills and benefit the chapter in a way I never had before.
