Vice-President

Speeches

Christiana – My name is Christiana Hatch and I am running for the position of Vice President of our chapter. I am very thankful for this opportunity and am excited to see what is to come. I think I am a good candidate for this position because I am organized, responsible and love to learn and teach. It would be an honor to serve as vice president of our chapter and I look forward to seeing what the future holds.

Questions

  1. Describe what techniques you use to manage your time.
    • (Christiana) There are a few techniques that I use to manage my time. I keep a physical planner where I write down all of my assignments and tasks with due dates. Sometimes if it is a larger task, I will delegate time over a couple of days if time permits. I also keep a google calendar with all of the same things because sometimes I might not have my physical planner and will have my phone or laptop.
    • (Hailey) I have a planner for all of my school assignment. I use my google calendar to organize my schedule and make sure I don’t forget/have overlapping events. When I notice I am starting to procrastinate something like an assignment and wasting time, I drag myself out of my house and the library or some place where I can accomplish what I need to get done (I dragged myself to connection to do this haha)
    • (Kaia) I currently use to-do lists for each week to keep track of things needing to be done, and it serves as a good reminder of what I need to do and allows me to easily sort what needs to get done first. I try to use my time between classes and other meetings to get things done so I have little to bring home with me.
  2. How comfortable are you with making tough decisions?
    • (Christiana) I feel comfortable with making tough decisions. Tough decisions are a part of life and they have to be made. Sure they aren’t easy but it is essential to make them.
    • (Hailey) I have no doubt that I can make tough decisions. I feel confident that I will be able to think reasonably/realistically and sort through hard situations and come to a decision that is best for everyone.
    • (Kaia) While it’s something I try to avoid, I’m comfortable with it if it’s something that needs to happen. I try to mitigate damage and make sure as little people are being affected as possible, and nobody feels targeted by my decisions.
  3. What ideas do you have for recruitment events? How will you tie in the pillars?
    • (Christiana) I really like how the recruitment events were set up this past year. I think tying in the pillars is something that was very neat. It gives the potential MC’s a little taste of what our fraternity is about.
    • (Hailey) I would love to at least continue to do capture the flag because everyone seems to really enjoy that one as well as get the scoop because that is a great opportunity for people to learn about the fraternity. I would like to incorporate some sort of service recruitment event because service is an important aspect of our fraternity. It would still need to be something fun and engaging to get people’s interest so I was thinking maybe we can have a recruitment event where we make cards for different faculty (especially music faculty) to hand out. It’s fun, creative, and an act of service.
    • (Kaia) I really liked the way we did recruitment events this year with each one corresponding to a pillar, and I would love to carry on that tradition. Some ideas I have are marshmallow tower building (build the tallest tower out of marshmallows and spaghetti noodles) for leadership and karaoke night for musicianship.
  4. What is your experience with giving presentations/public speaking/teaching and how do you think those skills/experiences will translate into your work as Vice President?
    • (Christiana) My experience with public speaking and giving presentations are mainly limited to the ones I have done in classes. I’ve had a lot of experience with classes that aim to help in the development of creating presentations and giving them. I do enjoy creating presentations. As for teaching, I have past experience in coaching various youth sports and I have past leadership experience through jobs. I do love to teach and am looking into a career that includes a lot of public education. I feel like these skills will translate well into my work as Vice President. It might be a bit of a learning curve but I learn quickly and feel like it can get comfortable quickly.
    • (Hailey) I have given plenty of presentations for classes and over time have gotten more comfortable with speaking in front of people. As a service chair, I have gotten comfortable speaking in front of all my brothers during meetings when I need to announce an event, etc. I am confident I would be able to do the same as the Vice president.
    • (Kaia) I’ve given a lot of presentations in classes in the past few years and teach others subjects in and out of class. I think these would transfer to being vice president because they’ve made me comfortable in front of a crowd, and I think the first face the new members see should be one that’s calm and collected.
  5. Describe the ways you stay organized and give examples.
    • (Christiana) I stay organized by keeping a planner and planning out my week in advance. Using school as an example, I spread out all of my assignments over the week based on when they are due. I also keep a digital planner on Google Calendar. I would consider myself a very organized person.
    • (Hailey) Staying organized has always been something that has come naturally to me. I always considered it as one of my strengths. Organizing is also one of the first things I will do when I am bored because I just enjoy doing it. It is hard for things of mine to get unorganized when I am constantly looking for things I can sort through (my room, documents, email, phone, etc.) I have my planner and calendar to organize dates and deadlines.
    • (Kaia) I like to sort information into different folders/categories so I can prevent it from getting mixed together while still being in the same area. I also make sure my labels for things are informative so I know specifically what is in each location.
  6. What kind of hands-on activities would you implement in lessons to engage prospective members?
    • (Christiana) I feel like involving little hands on activities would be a great way to engage prospective members. Icebreakers are great and simple. I am not entirely sure if this is possible but at the first lesson I would ask the prospective members what would help them learn in the best way possible. Everyone learns differently and I want to be considerate and aware of that. One of the best professors I have ever had asked the class how they want things structured and what she could do to make sure the students get the most out of class. I appreciated this very much and would love to incorporate some of this into the lessons.
    • (Hailey) I would make the slideshow fun and engaging, I could do a kahoot about the stuff they learned, and I can do a welcome activity before the lesson that is just for funsies and to get people more comfortable. Examples include a rock-paper-scissors tournament, 20 questions, and taking time to share good things, etc. (like we do for good of the psi)
    • (Kaia) One of the ideas I have is sorting each pillar and how it’s important into columns using slips of paper with writing on them.
  7. How do you plan to recruit new members from outside of the marching band?
    • (Christiana) I think one of the biggest ways to recruit new members outside of the marching band is to advertise outside of the marching band. I am not a music major or minor but I think, if we could be given permission, going into different classes at the beginning or end to talk for a few minutes about KKPsi and what we are all about could be beneficial. If we can advertise more on social media or through the campus posting boards, that could potentially work.
    • (Hailey) I can make an announcement/ask the marching band members to talk to their music major friends who are in a band ensemble, etc. to consider going with them to a recruitment event, post fliers about us/recruitment events in the pac/etc, and continue to utilize our social media.
    • (Kaia) I would post recruitment events outside of the PAC in order to reach other majors that may have a love for music but aren’t in marching band. As well, members can make announcements in other ensembles about KKPSI.
  8. Why do you want to be Vice President?
    • (Christiana) I want to be Vice President because I love this organization. Being a part of this community has made me a better person and I would love to continue to grow with the chapter. I would love to have the opportunity to lead and strive for the highest. One thing that is very memorable about the process of becoming a full active member is the membership candidate lessons. It is one of the most memorable experiences for me so far and I would love to continue on and share those experiences with new classes to come.
    • (Hailey) I want to be vice president because as vice president, you are in charge of recruitment events as well as running lessons for member candidates. For this job, you want someone who is outgoing and welcoming. I think I have the potential to do a great job at that and it seems like something that will come easily to me.
    • (Kaia) In my previous leadership positions I felt I didn’t get to connect with the new members as I would have liked to, and I know I would be able to do this as vice president. While I loved being secretary, I felt a little disconnected from the new class when they came in due to having never interacted with a lot of them before they were full members.
